It's my illustrations for the book '"Christmas Eve" by Mykola Gogol. It's a story about the night before Christmas in Dikanka, Ukraine.
The young man named Vakula is in love with a beautiful girl named Oksana. He can do everything for her but she doesn't love him.
Meanwhile, on the eve of Christmas, evil spirits roam and after Christmas, they will have to leave the human world, so the devil (chort) visits the local witch
Christmas night has begun. Kolyada began to walk around the village and sing, congratulating people on the holiday. The snow was flying and glittering in the moonlight.

Oksana also joined her friends and went caroling. Vakula saw her and froze, he could not stop thinking about her. "Vakula, if you bring me shoes like a queen's, I will marry you!" - laughed the girl.
The young man thought that the girl was mocking him. "Bye Oksana, you will never see me again" and left. At the edge of the village, he met the devil. The devil promised to fulfill all the dreams of the man, but Vakula just grabbed the devil and sat on him: "Let's fly!", "Where?" - the devil was scared. "To the queen for the shoes!" - said Vakula and rose into the air.
The beauty was in a stew: "What if I was too cruel with him? If I never see him again?". She stayed up all night and thought about him and by morning fell in love with Vakula.
In the morning, no one in the village saw Vakula. Residents gossiped that he killed himself. Oksana was in despair. But the guy returned and brought her shoes. ''Oksana, I brought you shoes like a queen." "I don't need shoes," smiled Oksana, "I only need you."
